Faculty of Pharmacy at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) have proudly earned international acclaim by winning a Silver Medal along with a Special Award at the prestigious Malaysia Technology Expo 2026. This notable event was held over the course of three days, from April 9 to April 11, 2026, and brought together innovative minds and researchers from around the world who showcased groundbreaking technologies and scientific advancements.
The distinguished team representing UMS consisted of four talented pharmacy students: Nadya Putri Adisty, Elsya Bella Putri Darfani, Lutfiana Zulfa, and Maryam Mahdiyyah Abdul Majiid. Their outstanding achievement was recognized not only with a Silver Medal but also with a Special Award conferred by the Chinese Innovation and Invention Society (CIIS). This special accolade was awarded in acknowledgment of the exceptional quality and significant scientific contribution of their innovation within the field of biotechnology and medical research.
The project that earned these accolades is titled:
“GENOVA: Avocado Seed Oil–Based Lipid Nanoparticles for Biocompatible DNA Delivery in Breast Cancer Gene Therapy Using the CRISPR-Cas9 Editing Method.”
This innovative research introduces a cutting-edge approach to breast cancer treatment through gene therapy. GENOVA utilizes lipid nanoparticles derived from avocado seed oil as a delivery vehicle for DNA, specifically designed to be biocompatible and safe for use in the human body. By harnessing these natural lipid nanoparticles, the method aims to improve the delivery efficiency of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing system, which is a revolutionary technology that enables precise edits to DNA sequences. The ultimate goal of this approach is to enhance the therapeutic effects while minimizing potential side effects, offering a promising advancement in cancer gene therapy.
The success of this project exemplifies the high level of expertise, creativity, and dedication demonstrated by UMS pharmacy students. It also underscores their ability to conduct research that is not only scientifically innovative but also applicable to real-world medical challenges on a global scale. This achievement further solidifies the Faculty of Pharmacy at UMS as a leading institution in pharmaceutical sciences and research, recognized for its commitment to advancing knowledge and technology internationally.
Moreover, this accomplishment serves as an inspiring milestone for the entire UMS academic community. It encourages students and researchers alike to continue pursuing innovative solutions and contributing meaningfully to the progress of science and technology. The recognition at the Malaysia Technology Expo 2026 is a testament to the potential of young researchers to make impactful contributions that can shape the future of healthcare and improve patient outcomes worldwide.
In conclusion, the awards received by the UMS pharmacy team at this international expo reflect both their individual talents and the strong support system provided by their institution. It is hoped that this achievement will motivate more students to explore new frontiers in research and innovation, thereby fostering a culture of excellence and creativity within the university and beyond.
